How to Prevent Back Pain
Causes of Back Pain
One condition that is becoming more common is back
pain. Over four out of every five people will suffer from this condition at one
point or another in their lives. Many times it is small things in our daily
routine that can make a big difference in whether we have to deal with back
pain. Preventing it is the best way to deal with it and can help you avoid more
complicated back issues down the road.
Lifting Safely and Correctly
Lifting safely involves using the upper thighs and legs instead of the back when lifting objects up from a lower place. That gives the person a tremendous edge along with keeping the object close to your body. By tightening the abdominal muscles when lifting, or lifting using leg force alone, some back pain gets avoided.
Helping Your Back in Bed
A third of a human's life gets spent in bed sleeping. It is possible that a few different things about your sleeping arrangements could be causing back pain. Try to sleep on the left side or your back using some pillows for support. Another cause of back pain is having the wrong sleeping routines. Hardly ever sleeping or laying down can hurt your back after long enough. It is a major cause of back pain and injury. Many people who sit at a desk all day long have work to blame for causing them back pain. Something needs done to avoid prolonged stress on your back to get the pain to let up.
Protecting Your Back at Work
During long hours at work, you need to sit in a comfortable position that offers some bit of relief. Always sit with good posture because slumping at a computer desk, or anywhere else for that matter, is harmful since it puts extra pressure on the spine. Sit with your eyes level to the monitor and make it so you do not have to move your head up or down to see the screen. Buying yourself a really nice chair that supports your lower back and keeping your knees bent at a 90 degree angle will both help to keep your spine in a better position. A way to alleviate some of that pain is to take a five-minute break every hour or two just to get the blood flowing. This will work great to relieve some of the pressure that is building up on your spine.
Maintaining a Healthy Weight
By gaining a couple of extra pounds, you can greatly add to the spine's pressure. If you are able to stay within the recommended weight, after factoring in age and body type, it will help you avoid many forms of back pain. Having a healthy weight will affect more than just your back pain. Forcing your frame to carry around extra pounds makes it harder to maintain a good posture, which causes much more unneeded stress on your spine.
Listen to Warning Signs
A tight and painful back comes from one that gets abused. When your back hurts, do not ignore this sign and keep trying to do exactly what you were doing. Take a little break and give it a rest. Then start back a little slower. A short break and reduced efficiency is worth far more than the what you can do when you can not work due to pain.
Most people can feel some small pain now and then while others end up with sharp pains that do not relent. If you have a pain that is just too much to take or one that is acting up in the same place for a few days in a row, contact a doctor and see what options might be available to you.
